Project Description:

This project involved the replacement of an existing package plant with a new 130,000-gpd, R-1 wastewater reclamation facility to serve and allow for expansion of the Kona International Airport Collection system work included the design of a pump station and force main. The wastewater reclamation facility liquid stream consisted of bar screens, grinder, equalization basin, oxidation ditch, secondary clarifier, effluent filter, ultraviolet disinfection, and effluent storage and pumping facility. Solids handling consisted of decanting and facultative sludge basins to allow for lower cost batch processing of sludge.

Wastewater disposal was synergistically addressed by reusing effluent for irrigation for landscaping around the airport, which had suffered from a lack of water.
