Kamehameha Schools, Kapalama Campus, GIS Database Development for Facilities Management

Location: Oahu, Hawaii
Client Name: Kamehameha Schools
Date Completed: 2008
Construction Cost: N/A
Disciplines Applied: Surveying & Mapping

Project Description:

Kamehameha Schools (KS) commissioned R.M. Towill Corporation (RMTC) to develop a GIS database of its sewer and drain features for the entire 600-acre Kapalama campus on Oahu.

Specific tasks involved in the turnkey delivery of this GIS database were:

  • Survey- RMTC surveyed and field verified primarily the sewer and drain system for the high school campus (upper and lower).
  • Data Entry – RMTC converted the client’s existing Autocad utility survey files to ArcGIS file format (shapefiles). RMTC inputted data including approximately 20 utility system features (i.e., inlet, pipe, manhole, valve, etc.) and related fields (i.e., material, diameter, length, invert, date of installation, date of last maintenance, etc.). QA/QC of data format and functionality was performed through multiple queries using the GIS software. GIS files were created using ESRI ArcMap 9.0 software as agreed by the client.
  • Delivery and Training – RMTC delivered a fully-functional GIS database, including GIS software and utility files, loaded onto a single-station desktop computer.  RMTC’s GIS specialist also trained KS staff on appending and editing the database, and running basic queries on the system.

The database is currently being used and continually updated by Operations Support Division to proactively manage and maintain the utilities on campus.
