Project Description:

RMTC was engaged by the City and County of Honolulu to prepare a study of alternative alignments and recommend a preferred alignment for the extension of Makakilo Drive to the North-South Road Interchange along Interstate Route H-1 in Kapolei. The project provides greater accessibility and alternative means for commuters to access the Makakilo community, its residents, facilities, and services.

RMTC, as prime consultant, provided full coordination of required engineering disciplines and environmental studies for the preparation of NEPA-compliant Environmental Assessment. The planning effort involved extensive community outreach, context-sensitive solutions, and multi-disciplinary engineering services. The outreach process featured a project advisory committee consisting of residents, the Neighborhood Board, landowners, government agencies, and developers. Features of the roadway’s preliminary design include a four-lane divided roadway with a 78 foot right-of-way, sidewalks, bike route, landscaping, and lighting. The roadway will also include a 700-foot long elevated (bridge) section at the connection with the existing Makakilo Drive.
