The Gateway Distributed Energy Resource (DER) project showcases the alternative energy possibilities available at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii (NELHA) for the State of Hawaii. The DER Center consists of a visitor center, laboratory building, and parking lot. RMTC’S innovative design of this project incorporates numerous energy saving features.
RMTC was tasked with providing the civil engineering design and permits for this project. The design incorporates a parking lot paved with soil cement instead of asphalt concrete for cost benefits. Also provided are onsite water and sewer/septic systems, and piping for seawater, which is used to cool the buildings. Unique designs incorporated into the site work include hard surfaces consisting of compacted aggregate stabilized by a liquid polymer and a 20,000 square foot, 5-foot high raised platform for the visitor center.
RMTC also prepared an NPDES permit for construction stormwater.
