The purpose of the project was to expand usable beach park areas by eliminating a traffic lane on Kalakaua Avenue . The project consisted of creating landscaped areas with meandering walkways, hula and entertainment area, water features and a new restroom facility along Kuhio Beach ; and replacing the existing water line with a new 16" water line in Kalakaua Avenue . Components of the project included public outreach, working with the City and County of Honolulu and State of Hawaii in the development of conception plans, preparation of bid documents and performance of services during construction. (National Recognition Award by the Consulting Engineers Council of Hawaii, 2001; Project of the Year by the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, 2001; and Beautification Award by the Outdoor Circle, 2001 )
