R. M. Towill Corporation
worked with the Waianae community to develop a master plan
for a 7.5-acre neighborhood park. Project services included
conducting community planning workshops, preparing environmental
studies, and master planning an active-recreation park. Planned
improvements include new basketball and volleyball courts,
resurfaced multi-purpose playing fields, new irrigation system,
lighting, pedestrian pathway, parking, and native plant landscaping.
The plan required a flexible design to accommodate the possible
future development of a 5,000 to 10,000 square-foot community
center without precluding the maximum use of the park for
active recreation. The solution is a plan created around two major
phases of development hinging upon parking expansion, but
representing three alternatives:
• No community center and retain
existing comfort station.
• Small community center
(5,000 sf / 1story) and retain existing comfort station (shown
above).
• Large community center
(10,000 sf / 2 stories) with expanded parking
